In a pulsating session, the Italian Trident driver set the fastest time on his very last lap to beat Emil Bernstorff to pole by 0.036s.

Ghiotto swapped the top spot early on with Esteban Ocon, before Bernstorff set a new benchmark at 1m34.504s.

As the track evolved, pole changed hands again as Ghiotto recorded 1m34.296s, which was beaten by Marvin Kirchhofer’s 1m34.231s.

Bernstorff took it back with 1m34.066s, which looked good enough for pole right until the chequered flag when Ghiotto stole it with 1m34.030s.

Bernstorff will start alongside him on the front row, with Ocon third ahead of Kirchhofer, Jimmy Eriksson and Matt Parry.

Alex Palou, Ferrari junior Antonio Fuoco, Kevin Ceccon and Pal Varhaug complete a tightly bunched top 10.
