Caldarelli has been primarily racing in Japan’s Super GT series since 2011 and came close to winning the championship in ‘14.

He also contested the final two rounds of this year’s Blancpain GT Sprint series for Grasser Racing Lamborghini, finishing on the podium on both occasions.

The Italian will now drive Dragon Racing’s Penske EV-2 on January 14, a day after the second round of the FE season at Circuit Moulay El Hassan.

It will be his first outing in single-seaters since 2015, when he raced in Super Formula for the Toyota-powered Impul squad.

“I’m delighted to attend FIA Formula E Rookie Test in Marrakesh,” he said. “I want to thank Jay Penske and all Dragon Racing for the chance to be part of this amazing series.

“It’s something new for me and I’m very excited to drive an electric car, so far I had the opportunity to race with some hybrid system, but being involved in a full electric vehicle is a motivating challenge.

“Street circuits are something I’ve always appreciated in my career, so Marrakesh will be for sure an exciting adventure with one of the most competitive teams of the series”.

Caldarelli has a long standing association with Toyota, dating back to 2008 when he tested the Japanese manufacturer’s Formula 1 car.  He also played a role in the early development of Toyota’s LMP1 machine.

Dragon is yet to announce who will test alongside Caldarelli in Marrakesh.
