The first Monaco ePrix has been declared a success by series boss Alejandro Agag.

Over 20,000 fans witnessed the first race of its kind on the streets of the Principality today, with celebrity fans and VIPs including Prince Albert of Monaco, singer Natalie Imbruglia, ex-F1 boss Flavio Briatore and Oscar winning actor Adrien Brody taking in the event.

An event for 'many years to come'

“I think to get all of these people here is great and the place was really atmospheric for the event,” Agag told Motorsport.com. “It was the first race in Europe and the reaction we have had has been very good. I think that the Monaco ePrix can become a very nice fixture for us, hopefully for many years to come.”

Agag refused to blame the narrowness of the cut-through leg of the circuit from Saint Devote to the harbour hairpin which was the scene of the spectacular first lap accident.

“It is quite narrow there (at Saint Devote)  but these guys are professional drivers and really it could happen anywhere that kind of knock-on incident, the track is not a concern there at all really, it’s just racing and sometimes these spectacular things happen occasionally,” he said.

Impressive ticket sales for London

Agag has also revealed that the Battersea Park event in London sold just over 5,000 tickets on the first day that they became available.

“That is great news because it shows there is a real appetite for the race there in London,” he said. “On the first day with little promotion to sell that amount and get that take up is impressive.”
