The 25-year-old, who has lost his Haas F1 seat to Kevin Magnussen, was announced as Formula E's newest driver today at a press conference in Mexico City.

The event was attended by the Mexican driver, Formula E boss Alejandro Agag and the mayor of Mexico City, Miguel Angel Mancera Espinosa.

"I'll do the Mexico race, and probably others in preparation for the 2018 season," said Gutierrez.

"It's an exciting future for my career. I feel very proud of being a part of this new tendency of electric cars."

It remains unclear as to which team Gutierrez will race for but Motorsport.com understands that one option for him is to join the Faraday Future Dragon Racing team.

Should this scenario play out then the likelihood is that Loic Duval would lose his seat to the Mexican.

The new Audi DTM driver will miss the Paris and Brussels ePrix's as the dates clash with the Lausitzring and Norisring DTM rounds.

Today's move comes after Gutierrez was unable to find a place on the 2017 F1 grid.

The switch to Formula E is sure to be seen as a major boost for the all-electric championship as it continues to attract some of the world's best single-seater talent. Gutierrez will become the eighth former F1 driver on the grid.

Gutierrez's move to Formula E is believed to have been fast-tracked in order for him to get up to speed before the Mexico City ePrix in April, although his possible participation in next month's Buenos Aires is yet to be confirmed.

His signing will be a massive boost to Formula E and the Mexican race, which will take place for its second event on April 1.
