Jaguar Formula E team recruits Williams F1 engineers

Williams and Jaguar Formula 1 engineer and designer John Russell has been hired by the Jaguar Formula E team that will debut in season three.

Jaguar Formula E team recruits Williams F1 engineers

Russell first worked for Williams in 1989, when he was race engineer to Riccardo Patrese. He then went on to work with David Coulthard, Damon Hill and briefly Nigel Mansell at the end of 1994.

Moving on to take technical charge of the Williams Touring Car projects in the 1990s and then overseeing the BMW project that won Le Mans in 1999, Russell then moved to the Jaguar F1 team in 2000, where he held the position of chief designer.

He then went on to re-join Williams in 2006, before embarking on a long stint working for Prodrive and Triple Eight in V8 Supercars.

In addition to Russell, the Jaguar team has also added another Williams employee to its squad.

Tim Newton, former Team Manager at Williams F1 between 2006 and 2010 will take charge of the operations element of the Formula E project. He is still with the squad as test team manager.

Several key Jaguar Formula E staff were in Berlin last weekend, including Jaguar’s new electrical engineering chief and lead designer of the current Formula E battery, Okan Tur.

Tur has previous experience of working with the Jaguar brand, as he was part of the design team on a hybrid programme for AVL, the world's largest independent company for the development of powertrain systems.

As revealed last week by Motorsport.com, the team will make its public debut during a special demonstration at the Battersea Park finale in July.

The top 10 Formula E drivers of 2020-21

OPINION: The 2021 Formula E campaign was one without a narrative for much of the season, with no single car or driver able to break away from the pack. That makes choosing a top 10 especially difficult, particularly as the qualifying format meant some worthy performers were unable to enjoy their day in the sun.
