MID-SEASON TESTING BOOST FOR RAPID SIMS AT MAGNY-COURS
MSA Team UK driver Alexander Sims enjoyed a highly positive outing during mid-season Formula 3 Euroseries testing at Magny-Cours in France this week, the 2010 championship contender ending the second and final day of running with the equal-fastest time.
Off the back of a richly deserved second place finish in the blue riband RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 race at Zandvoort last weekend, the former McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner continued his strong form by matching the pace of F3 Euroseries championship leader Edoardo Mortara to the precise 1,000th of a second -- both drivers lapping with a best of 1m34.142 seconds.
Focusing on working his way through a variety of set-up options on his Mercedes-powered car during the opening day, 22-year-old Alexander then rocketed to the top of the timesheets on day two with a superb performance.
Reflecting on the Magny-Cours outing, he said: "The test was pretty positive, to end equal fastest with (Edoardo) Mortara was good and shows we're definitely moving in the right direction. The start of the season hasn't been as smooth as we'd hoped but I've been working very hard, as has the team, to turn that around.
"Our pace on new tyres in qualifying hasn't been as strong as our race pace but we're really getting on top of that now. We worked through a lot of things on the car during the first day at Magny-Cours before setting the joint-fastest time on day two which was pleasing. Overall, we did a very good job and I'm pretty happy with the outcome."
Next on the agenda for Alexander will be the resumption of his F3 Euroseries title bid, rounds seven and eight, which will take place at the Norisring in Germany on 3rd/4th July. Heading into the event the BRDC Superstar is equal fourth in the standings, tied on points with ART Grand Prix team-mate Valtteri Bottas, and has one race victory and two further podiums to his credit.
"I'm looking forward to going back to the Norisring", he added, "We went well there last year and were quick, I see no reason why we shouldn't be able to challenge for a couple of wins this time. At Magny-Cours we worked on eliminating drag on the car, due to Norisring being a zero downforce track, and I'm happy with what we achieved. We're certainly aiming for a strong weekend there."
