Formula 3 Euro Series at Brands Hatch (GB)
Volkswagen driver Mortara leads as championship visits England
Volkswagen driver Eduardo Mortara (Team Signature) travels as championship leader to the seventh Formula 3 Euro Series race weekend at Brands Hatch, England. The Italian has fond memories of the circuit located southeast of London where he actually scored his first win last year in the hard-fought "star of tomorrow" series. It is the first Euro Series race at the traditional British circuit for Volkswagen after stepping up to Formula 3 in autumn 2007. Competing alongside Mortara between 29 and 31 August are five other drivers powered by Volkswagen -- Franck Mailleux (F) and Jean Karl Vernay (F, Team Signature) and also Congfu Cheng (CN), Jens Klingmann (Leimen) and Martin Plowman (GB, Team RC Motorsport).
"Brands Hatch is a track steeped in tradition and because of its unique character with many elevation changes it is also a highlight on the calendar. Although it is the shortest track of the year at only two kilometres in length, it is however very difficult," says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "Volkswagen races for the first time at Brands Hatch, so we hardly have any experience there yet. In spite of this we have scored some good results this year on other circuits which we had previously never visited."
Edoardo Mortara, who has fond memories of Brands Hatch, holds a one point lead in the overall standings from Nico Hulkenberg (Emmerich/Mercedes-Dallara): "I had a very good weekend there last year. I scored my first Formula 3 win from pole position," reports the 21-year old. "I like the track, especially the first corner which demands a lot of courage. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to overtake, which is why qualifying is so important. Only the drivers at the front have a chance of a good race result. I think that the circuit will suit us. I want to score as many points as possible and aim to defend my championship lead."
Home race for Volkswagen driver Martin Plowman
The Brands Hatch race weekend is something very special for Volkswagen driver Martin Plowman. For the 20-year old Englishman from Tamworth contesting his first Formula 3 season it is his first race on home soil for some time. "The Brands Hatch track is completely new to me as I've raced almost exclusively in Italy for the last couple of years. This means I have to learn the circuit as quickly as possible in practice. I'm well motivated for my home race and aim to repeat my performance from the Formula 3 Masters at Zolder in the middle of August, where I drove a good race and only narrowly missed finishing in the top ten." Plowman's team mate Congfu Cheng, who also lives in England, even travels to the county of Kent with winning experience: He won the National Class in the British Formula 3 Championship twice there in 2007.
