Carlin driver Li sustained broken heel bones and fractured vertebrae after a horror shunt at Spielberg, in which he hit the stationary car of teammate Ryan Tveter at a high speed and was launched into the air.

As such, the team has called up Buller for the Norisring weekend, the Northern Irishman having raced for Carlin back in 2012.

That year, he scored two wins in the F3 Euro Series, along with his famous win in GP3 from the back of the grid in a wet Silverstone race.

Since then, Buller has raced in Formula Renault 3.5 before switching his attention to Super Formula, where he represents Kondo Racing.

"The whole Carlin team have been really great in welcoming me back into the fold," Buller said.

"After racing in Japan for the last few seasons it’s a great opportunity for me to come back into Europe and I’m confident I can produce a strong performance as racing in Super Formula has really improved me as a driver.

"Trevor and I feel as though there is definitely some unfinished business at Norisring after not getting awarded the win in 2012," he added, referring to when Dani Juncadella's saw an F3 race winner-less, with Buller not being promoted from the runner-up spot.

Carlin is to run three cars at the Norisring this weekend, with Buller joined by regulars Alessio Lorandi and Tveter, the latter having already recovered from the crash.

The car vacated by Raoul Hyman and driven by Weiron Tan in Austria will not race this weekend.
