How Indians performed over the weekend (June 30 - July 2)

Jehan Daruvala (European F3 Norisring)

Best result: Win

In the opening race of the weekend, Daruvala took advantage of others’ troubles to climb from ninth to sixth at the flag.

In Race 2, Daruvala was part of the leading group of drivers and passed Hitech GP’s Ralf Aron to finish fourth.

However, it was the final race of weekend that earned him plaudits. Having qualified on the front row of the grid based on second fastest qualifying times, the Force India driver got the jump on polesitter Maximilian Gunther to lead into turn 1.

He immediately established a 1.1 second buffer at the front of the field, before two Full Course Yellows allowed Gunther to close in again.

Despite the intense pressure from the championship leader, the 18-year-old didn’t put a foot wrong and crossed the line 0.428s clear of the Prema driver to take the victory.

With this remarkable result, Daruvala became the first Indian to win in European F3 and the first in any major Formula 3 race since Narain Karthikeyan.

Mahindra (Moto3 Sachsenring)

Best result: 15th

Mahindra Racing returned to points at the Sachsenring round of MotoGP, with CIP rider Marco Bezzecchi finishing 15th after a last-ditch effort on the final lap.

Bezzecchi dropped from 18th to 21st by lap 3, but started recovering positions in the final seven laps of the race.

On the final tour, the Italian reeled in VR46 rider Andrea Migno and Peugeot's Jakub Kornfeil to elevate himself to the final points-paying position in 15th.

Kornfeil was the next highest Mahindra rider in 18th, while factory-supported Aspar team’s Lorenzo Dalla Porta finished 19th, over 40s behind race winner Joan Mir.

CIP’s Manuel Pagliani finished right on the tail of Dalla Porta in 20th position, while Albert Arenas’ replacement Raul Fernandes was further up the road in 22nd. Peugeot’s other rider Patrik Pulkkinen was classified 25th.

Ameya Vaidyanathan (EuroFormula Open Hungary)

Best result: Sixth

Ameya Vaidyanathan had a relatively ordinary weekend in EuroFormula, which dropped him to third in the standings behind Nikita Triotskiy.

In Race 1, Vaidyanathan was unlucky to be in the path of Daniil Pronenko and Matheus Iorio, who crashed at the exit of turn 1 in an incident that also damaged the Carlin driver’s suspension system.

On Sunday, however, the 20-year-old was able to steer clear of trouble, navigating himself from ninth to sixth by end of lap 1.

Thereafter, he had the pace to chase the top runner but couldn’t get past RP’s Motorsport Alex Karkosik at a track that is notoriously difficult for overtaking.

He eventually had to settle for sixth place and the eight championship points that came along with it.

Tarun Reddy (EuroFormula Open Hungary)

Best result: Sixth

Racing alongside countryman Vaidyanathan in the sister Carlin car, Reddy equalled his best result of the season by finishing sixth in Race 1.

In the second race he was again able to take advantage of the first lap melee to rocket from 14th to ninth place.

After the safety car - deployed to clear the stranded cars - was withdrawn, Matheus Iorio passed Reddy, dropping the British F3 graduate to 10th position.

Bonus: Mahindra (Goodwood Festival of the Speed)

Mahindra Racing showcased their season 4 Formula E car for the first time in public at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Moreover, the Indian outfit’s regular driver Nick Heidfeld successfully broke the electric single-seater record, going up the hill in just 48.59s.
