The only way is up!
From 12th to 6th and from 6th to 4th ! The French Rookie produced another couple of storming races at the Euro Speedway. "I discovered the circuit on Thursday. The track was dry, and then we had lots of rain during the week- end, but I think we proved competitive whatever the conditions and we constantly improved."
On a rainy Friday, Guillaume was very confident after impressive drives in pre-event second test session (2nd quickest) and free practice (3rd). Then qualifying was punctuated by two red flags. Thanks to the first one, the team could change for a better set-up, but because of the second one, Guillaume couldn't find the time to improve enough and had to be content with 6th position on the grid for race 2. On Saturday, the track was wet again at the beginning of race 1's qualifying, but it soon turned to dry. Guillaume pitted for slicks but the session was stopped again. It recommenced with just 5 minutes remaining, and Guillaume found his team- mate Fabio Carbone in his way. "I let him go during my warm-up lap, but not enough and closed in during the very last lap, just as the track was at his quickest." This meant he couldn't qualify higher then 12th for Saturday afternoon's race.
Race 1's start was a rolling one due to oil on the track. "We chose wet tyres, but Guerrieri was on slicks in front of me. I was not allowed to overtake him before the line, but he was slow and I lost some time behind." Guillaume quickly found a way past the Argentinien. "I knew that the track would get dryer and dryer. I was hot on my team-mate James Rossiter's wheels, despite driving conservatively so as not to ruin the tyres, and be able to push in closing stages." This strategy worked very well. Guillaume overtook the Brit on the outside, then the Loïc Duval / Hennes Neuhauser fighting pair in a go! Finally, he dropped Lucas Di Grassi down to 7th. The chequered flag came too soon to allow Guillaume to pressurise a struggling Perera for 5th. "After my poor qualifying, recovering 6th was satisfying" said Guillaume, whose fastest lap was just 2 tens of a second slower than Lewis Hamilton's.
The meeting ended on a dry track for Formula 3 Euro Series. This had not happened since the very first test session, but Guillaume and his engineer found a good set-up. "I had a bad start and it has been difficult in the opening laps. The first lap was wild, and Franchi, Hirate and Van der Garde passed. But then I charged behind Hirate, who tried to push me into the pit wall. I had to lift, but I could overtake him on the outside of the following corner. Short after that, I dived inside to take Van der Garde. I had a good pace, but I still had to find the ideal line for the dry in three corners of the circuit. Things suddenly fell into place so I pulled away from Perera and I was faster than Di Grassi at the end." Guillaume came home 5th, and first Rookie, but he was finally classified 4th after scutineering decided Di Resta's exclusion.
"It was a good week-end, on a fantastic track, with great audience in the grandstands, and plenty of action and overtaking. I will do my best to win the Rookie title and improve my championship position in Hockenheim. I am confident because the team and I are getting closer and closer to the benchmark of the category." The last meeting will take place on October 22nd and 23rd, at the famous German Grand Prix venue.
