McLaren junior Norris tops first Hungary F3 test day

McLaren junior Lando Norris set the pace on the opening day of European Formula 3 pre-season testing at the Hungaroring, closely followed by fellow rookie Joey Mawson.

Norris's top time of 1m34.893s was recorded during the morning session, which was dominated by his Carlin team.

The Briton, whose advantage was over three tenths, was followed by teammates Jake Dennis - who has been drafted in for this test in the as-yet unfilled fourth Carlin car - and Jehan Daruvala.

Van Amersfoort newcomer Mawson topped the afternoon test, becoming the second driver of the day to go below the 1m35s barrier.

His time fell 0.060s short of the benchmark set by Norris in the morning, but he surpassed the other Carlin drivers to take second overall.

Dennis wound up third, followed by Motopark's Joel Eriksson and VAR's Pedro Piquet, who set an identical time to the Swede. Harrison Newey was sixth-fastest in the third of the VAR cars.

Daruvala, just like Norris, didn't improve on his morning time, and the Force India junior ended up seventh.

The Prema trio of Maximilian Gunther, Callum Ilott and Guan Yu Zhou took eighth, ninth and 10th respectively, all three drivers separated by less than a tenth.

Mick Schumacher in the fourth Prema car was only 14th overall.
