Monza F3: Norris leads Carlin 1-2-3 in eventful opener
Lando Norris scored his second victory of the European Formula 3 season in the opening race at Monza, after chasing down and passing polesitter Jehan Daruvala.
The duo started from the front row and, while Daruvala led off the line, Norris slightly bogged down and fell behind fellow Carlin drivers Jake Dennis and Ferdinand Habsburg.
He quickly recovered by passing Habsburg and then took advantage of Dennis having to give up his position to Daruvala after he passed the Indian by cutting the first chicane.
Dennis fought back to take second place for a handful of laps, but Norris eventually got back ahead and set about closing down Daruvala's two-second advantage out front.
Norris was in striking distance with 11 minutes left on the clock, and went past Daruvala at Turn 1.
Daruvala kept up with Norris, but couldn't quite get close enough to the McLaren junior to attempt a pass, and it was the British driver who took the chequered flag by 0.6 seconds ahead of Daruvala.
Ferdinand Habsburg completed an all-Carlin podium in third, taking advantage of Joel Eriksson running wide in the latter stages.
Motopark's Eriksson brought a fourth Volkswagen-powered car into the top four, as the top Mercedes-powered driver, Prema's Guan Yu Zhou, was a further 10 seconds away in fifth.
Zhou emerged victorious in a multi-car fight for fifth, which started with another Prema driver, Callum Ilott, attacking Dennis.
However, Dennis lost out after being nudged by Maximilian Gunther at Turn 1, and eventually retired in the pits.
Zhou was followed by Prema teammates Mick Schumacher and Gunther, as well as Hitech's Ralf Aron. Ilott had to settle for ninth despite running as high as third in the early stages.
Hitech's Jake Hughes took the final point in 10th.
