ThreeBond with T-Sport was the only team to choose the Neil Brown Engineering power unit prior to the current FIA Formula 3 European Championship season. In changeable conditions at the Nürburgring, the Brits were able to rack up their first lap in the lead in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

Richard Goddard (ThreeBond with T-Sport) opted for rain tyres as the first part of the race was run in damp conditions and worked his way up through the ranks in a determined way until he was leading the race. The Australian held on to first place for seven laps.

For ThreeBond with T-Sport team manager, Russell Eacott, it was clear at an early stage already: “We will start the season with a Neil Brown Engineering engine.” The Brit had various reasons to do so: “We have known the company since we made our Formula 3 debut back in 2002. Back then, we also chose a Neil Brown engine.

We have a lot of mutual confidence and we know that both the engine and the support would be top-class. Moreover, our team base is only two hours away from Neil Brown Engineering’s headquarters, which makes co-operation away from the race track easier as well.”

Neil Brown Engineering was one of the first tuners to consider the new engine regulations. “We were convinced from the very beginning that there would be a market for this new Formula 3 engine,” says Gavin Harrison, Formula 3 manager at Neil Brown Engineering. “The engine then ran on the dyno for over a year before it was tested at the race track for the first time.

Last winter, we have racked up 3,600 kilometres in testing together with ThreeBond with T-Sport and we prepared meticulously for the upcoming season. That was necessary, too, to ensure that the engine would be not only fast, but also durable and reliable. It has to be kept in mind that the engine being used in this year’s FIA Formula 3 European Championship is an entirely new one.”

Eacott is certain: “The effort has paid off: the engine is competitive and we didn’t have any significant problems so far. We are also very happy with the durability.”

In the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, Neil Brown Engineering is currently playing the role of an outsider taking on stalwarts Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. “What many people don’t know is that Neil Brown Engineering has a long pedigree in motorsport. For instance, they have been building engines for touring car teams for many years and are very successful doing so,” Russell Eacott explains.

“And that is where we want to go, together with Neil Brown Engineering, in the Formula 3 European Championship as well: we want to keep on improving and, of course, would not have anything against additional mileage in the lead.”
