Nicholas Latifi (Prema Powerteam) contested his debut season on the FIA Formula 3 European Championship grid for Team Carlin. For his second season on the grid of the series he switched to Prema Powerteam and contests the races with the #1 on his car, this year. Following his first podium at Silverstone, the Canadian had to cope with a somewhat difficult season.
What is your conclusion with 27 races of the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season contested?
My season began in fine style but then, repeating the second place I secured in the third round of the Silverstone weekend proved to be difficult. I think that we arguably were better prepared than our competitors, in the early stages of the season but in the meantime, the competition has closed the gap. In addition, I had to cope with several doses of bad luck and again and again, I was forced into retirements due to accidents caused through no fault of my own or technical problems.
Why did you opt for contesting another FIA Formula 3 European Championship season?
I learned a lot, in the 2013 season, and wanted to make use of these experiences by securing good results, this year. As I see it, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship is the best series for learning a lot in both the racing and the technology areas. In no other young-driver series, you are free to work on the technology and refine it to the same extent as in Formula 3.
What makes the FIA Formula 3 European Championship special, from your point of view?
The quality of the drivers is higher than in any other series. I think that’s the most important one of the aspects making the FIA Formula 3 European Championship so attractive.
How does it feel to be a Prema Powerteam driver?
Prema have won the FIA Formula 3 European Championship’s drivers’ title for the third consecutive time, last year. So, they exactly know what they are doing. It feels really great to be a member of the squad and I also like the Italian atmosphere.
Have you got some favourite circuits on the 2014 calendar?
I particularly looked forward to racing at Silverstone. Driving there is big fun – and even more so with a Formula 3 vehicle.
What did you do in the off-season to prepare for things to come?
I tried to lose some weight. In addition, I contested the Florida Winter Series. This helped me keeping my racing rhythm alive and improving my reflexes.
