Berlin/Monza (rol/ot) The German Team Mücke Motorsport from Berlin started into the new season of the Formula 3 European Championships with a podium placing. Pascal Wehrlein from Worndorf finished third on Saturday (23rd of March) in Monza (Italy) at the first out of altogether 30 season runs, behind the Italian Raffaele Marciello and the Austrian Lucas Auer. The other three drivers of the racing stable from the German capital city, the Swede Felix Rosenqvist, Israeli Roy Nissany and the Australian Mitchell Gilbert (living in England) discarded early because of collisions in their Dallara Mercedes through no fault of their own.

Pascal Wehrlein, who only takes part at the Formula 3 European Championships in the first three races in Monza, got the pole position at the Qualifying for the season opening race on Saturday. Certainly he didn’t have a good start and after that he drove on second position at the first half of the race on the 5.973 kilometre long traditional track and then he got the third position. The driver from Worndorf, who will start on pole position at the second race on Sunday morning (24th of March) as well, had the fastest lap time. After the three races at the Formula 3 European Championships, the 18 year old switches to the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) as the youngest driver in that series and will drive alongside the Spanish Daniel Juncadella (both DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) for Mücke Motorsport.
Felix Rosenqvist had a great start in Monza and made his way up to position six right after the first lap coming from 11, but at the 11th out of 19 laps, he was pushed off track by one of his competitors. Roy Nissany was pushed off track as well right at the first turn after the start. And Mitchell Gilbert was unlucky as well and had to stable the car, when a competitor slashed his tire two laps before the end of the race.
„To start into the season with a podium placing is a good thing“, team principal Peter Mücke said. „Of course we are happy about that in between the hard fought and high class field of the European Championships with 30 drivers. Certainly we could have reached more though. Pascal didn’t have a great start and the overtaking out of the slipstream didn’t work out that well too.“ For his other three drivers „the bad luck was enough for the rest of the season. It only can get better from now on“, the team principal said. „After Roy discarded right at the first turn, our second newbie Mitchell showed a great race. He already made his way up to position ten coming from 16, before the accident happened“, Peter Mücke explained. „Felix showed a great race as well, but his catch up race ended when a competitor crashed into his rear end.“
