Rosenqvist wins crash-strewn second Monza race - videos

Once again starting from pole, Rosenqvist led away at the start as Dennis made a rapid getaway to move ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi off the line before challenging front row starter Charles Leclerc at the first chicane.

Dennis was able to force his way by the Monegasque, who then broke his front-left suspension on the rear of the Prema machine as he tried to cut back in the second part of the chicane, putting himself out of the race.

Towards the back of the field, a multi-car collision involving Arjun Maini, Tatiana Calderon and Julio Moreno brought out the Safety Car, Rosenqvist leading Dennis and Mucke teammates Mikkel Jensen and Santino Ferrucci at the restart.

Behind the top four, the battle for fifth between Giovinazzi and Lance Stroll ended in tears exiting the first chicane, as the pair tangled wheels, pitching Stroll’s Prema machine into a series of terrifying rolls up in the air and towards the catch fencing.

The Canadian emerged from the car seemingly unhurt, both he and championship leader Giovinazzi out of the race.

This brought out the Safety Car for a second time, the top four remaining static until there was a third caution period caused by Michele Beretta launching off a rival under braking for the first chicane and into a series of barrel-rolls.

Though Rosenqvist, Dennis, Jensen and Ferrucci remained tightly bunched, no successful passing moves were made. The race was ended with two minutes left on the clock, as Matt Rao launched over the rear of Alessio Lorandi’s car at the first chicane.

Behind the leading quartet, Brandon Maisano battled his way ahead of George Russell in an outside move at the first Lesmo, helped by the Brit being baulked by Gustavo Menezes.

The American then squandered his chance of taking a season-best finish of fifth by running into the gravel at the second Lesmo, allowing Maisano to take the place ahead of Russell.

Seventh went to Markus Pommer, ahead of Pietro Fittipaldi, who went backwards having held fifth during the first Safety Car period, Raoul Hyman and Sam MacLeod.

That group was fortunate to not get caught up in an incident involving an over-exuberant Dorian Boccolacci at the first chicane, who misjudged his braking and spun around Maximilian Gunther.
