Signature: portrait of the Euro Series team champion

19.09.2010 - With Edoardo Mortara's (Signature) victory in the drivers' classification of the Formula 3 Euro Series at Oschersleben, the Signature team had reason to celebrate for the second race weekend in a row already. At Brands Hatch, a fortnight earlier, the team had already secured the title in the teams' classification of the Euro Series. Thus, the French squad from Bourges that competed with Mortara, Marco Wittmann and Laurens Vanthoor this year, thus ended a four-years winning streak by ART Grand Prix.

This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Signature team. The squad was founded in 1990 by Philippe Sinault and the Frenchman is still leading the team today. Meanwhile, the team has established a second branch of activities next to single-seater racing as it is also competing in endurance events with a Lola-Aston Martin. However, Signature is not just a race team. Its 'Signatech Automobile' division is developing and building race cars and the 'Signature Frissons' department is organising motorsport events.

Signature has been competing in the Formula 3 Euro Series since the start of the championship in 2003. Over the years, one of the characteristics of the team was that it was always positive towards technical challenges. The biggest of them probably was running the SLC R1 chassis that was built by the Italian SLC company. Signature entered the compact car for stalwart Fabio Carbone. Especially in the rain, the Brazilian was able to show the car's potential, the best result was a fourth place on a wet track at Spa-Francorchamps.

In the engine area, Signature has also had various partners. The team started in 2003 with a Renault engine, but changed to Opel powerplants after one year already. After two more seasons, Mercedes-Benz engines were installed in the back of the Dallara cars entered by Signature, while the team opted for the newly-developed Volkswagen engines in 2008. Especially with Edoardo Mortara as a driver, the French team scored the first successes for the brand from Wolfsburg. One year later, the combination of Mortara, Signature and Volkswagen scored its maiden victory in the Macau Grand Prix. Now, next to winning the teams' title, the team can also celebrate its protégé Edoardo Mortara, who won the first drivers' title in the Formula 3 Euro Series.
