The Brazilian sophomore racer led the late stages of the afternoon session and his 1m33.660s effort was enough to keep him first as a last-minute flyer from Stroll fell 0.019s short.

Hitech's George Russell was best of the rest, four tenths adrift, with Maximilian Gunther taking fourth behind him.

He was closely followed by three Motopark drivers Niko Kari, Joel Eriksson and Guan Yu Zhou, all less than a tenth slower than the German.

Paul Ricard race winner Callum Ilott, championship leader Nick Cassidy and Anthoine Hubert completed the top 10.

The Kiwi driver was one of two drivers unable to improve on his time from the morning session, which was topped by him.

Cassidy led two of his teammates Stroll and Gunther, while the fourth Prema driver Ralf Aron took fifth, behind Ilott.
