Zandvoort F3: Norris pips Habsburg to Race 1 pole

McLaren junior Lando Norris took pole position for the opening European Formula 3 race of the weekend at Zandvoort, edging Carlin teammate Ferdinand Habsburg by 0.012 seconds.

Norris held the advantage at the halfway point in the 20-minute session with a best time of 1m28.521s, a time that was equalled by Callum Ilott when the Prema driver hit the track for his second run.

But Norris was able to find more time when he returned to the track late on, recording a 1m28.392s to grab a sixth pole of the 2017 season.

Habsburg came close to toppling teammate Norris in the final moments, but the Austrian could only muster a 1m28.374s and will therefore share the front row with the Briton.

Title contenders Joel Eriksson (Motopark) and Maximilian Gunther (Prema) will start third and fourth, Eriksson getting within 0.080s of Norris's benchmark, with Ilott shunted back to fifth.

Ralf Aron was best of the Hitech drivers in sixth, followed by David Beckmann (Motopark), Prema pair Guan Yu Zhou and Mick Schumacher, and Jake Hughes (Hitech).

The Van Amersfoort Racing contingent was led by Pedro Piquet in 11th, a little over half a second down.

Returning to F3 for the first time since breaking his wrist, Honda protege Tadasuke Makino could manage no better than 18th in his Hitech entry, some 1.6s off the pace.
