Ben Hurst claims Toyo Tires F1600 Championship

The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series is an open wheel racing based in Ontario and sanctioned by the CASC, Ontario region. The Series features wingless cars powered by both 1.6L Ford and 1.5L Honda normally aspirated engines and has two distinct classes, the "A" Class for the newest and most refined chassis and the "B" Class, for cars manufactured in 1994 or earlier.

In his third season of Formula 1600 racing, Hurst - from Oakville, Ontario and driving a Honda-powered Piper DL7 - captured two Class A wins and a runner up in the season’s finale. All three races were hard fought affairs with multiple lead changes and they all came down to the last lap with the margin of victory less than a second for all three races amongst the top three drivers.

“A truly incredible battle between three amazing racers,” said Hurst after Race 3. “We came out second overall and first in class. The best race I’ve had in an F1600 car, I learned a lot in this race alone and it was a great way to finish the season.”

"Ben [Hurst] had a great final weekend and thoroughly deserves his title, he has made improvements all season long and grew into a winner this season. He joins a long list of winners at Brian Graham Racing and we are very proud of his season and know he will be successful wherever he goes in his racing career,” said team owner Brian Graham.

Hurst took the title in the A Class with a total of 317 points. Keith Lobban was classified second with 184 points while Danby Crowder was third with 171. In the B class, Graham Lobban took the title with six wins and 365 points, beating David Graham (211) and Mike Lee (208).

One final note about the 2017 Formula 1600 Super Series, which is run at major events in Ontario and Québec. Parker Thompson of Red Deer, Alberta took the title with 275 points and seven wins. Konrad Czaczyk was classified second with 183 points (and two wins) while Roman De Angelis was third with 139 points (no wins).
