American Trenton Estep and the rest of the North American Spectrum factory team were unquestionably the class of the field all weekend long, which they demonstrated by setting the fastest lap in every single session and breaking the race track record, which was previously set by Exclusive Autosport driver Jack Mitchell, Jr. in 2014.
After leading the sole practice session on Saturday morning, Estep qualified the No. 90 Architext/Exclusive Autosport/Spectrum/Honda on pole for that afternoon’s first race of the weekend by half a second. He continued that statement of pace by leading every single lap of Saturday’s race en route to victory. Estep also won race 2 and finished 8th in race 3 after being hit twice by the same competitor.
However, the points scored for Estep’s eighth place finish were enough to secure the 2016 Formula 1600 Super Series – a combined title contested between the Ontario and Quebec Formula 1600 championships – for himself and the Exclusive Autosport team, a testament to the enormous effort and perseverance put forth by Estep and the entire crew.
“We knew coming into this weekend that it was important we have a perfect weekend,” said Exclusive Autosport team principal Michael Duncalfe. “Everyone was extremely focused on accomplishing that. The EA crew delivered a near perfect car and Trenton performed flawlessly every time he was on track.
“There was a lot of pressure on Trenton this weekend, and he performed like a pro. He didn’t put a wheel wrong all weekend, and he showed how strong of a driver he is and how strong of a package that EA and Spectrum put out there.”
