Konrad Czaczyk made history Saturday as he emerged as the winner of the inaugural race of the Formula 4 United States Championship powered by Honda at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Czaczyk, piloting the #47 Leading Edge Grand Prix car, started fifth on the grid and drove his way to victory with a dramatic move with two laps left in the race. Erstwhile leader and polesitter Kyle Kirkwood lost momentum going through the Keyhole, presenting Czaczyk with his chance.

“Coming out of Turn 1, I filled Kyle’s mirrors, and I think that put him under a little bit of pressure,” Czaczyk said. “I noticed he took a strange line out of the Keyhole. I told myself that this was my moment, and I needed to capitalize on it.”

Czaczyk then drafted Kirkwood’s down to Turn 7, and although the leader tried to protect the inside line, Czaczyk found a gap to grab the lead.

Cameron Das finished third, just 0.003sec behind Kirkwood. Das was later issued a penalty for forcing Michael Goodyear off the track, but although he was docked six points, he was allowed to keep his third place.

Darren Keane of JDX was fastest in practice on Friday, and lined up alongside Kirkwood on the grid but a spin on Lap 2 dropped him to the back of the field. He recovered only as far as 10th, but did set fastest lap, which gives him pole for the second of this weekend’s three races. Kirkwood will join him on the front row.
