The son of seven-time F1 champion Michael finalised his move to Prema Powerteam in February, but the team did not confirm whether the 17-year-old would contest the Germany-based ADAC F4 series or its Italian counterpart.

It has now been clarified that Schumacher will race in both championships in the early stages of the season, and that a decision will be made later on whether he will see out both schedules or switch his focus to one category.

Combining appearances in the German and Italian series was a common practice for F4 drivers last year, the two championships sharing a number of teams, as well as chassis and engine regulations.

Schumacher himself focussed on ADAC F4 with Van Amersfoort Racing last year, finishing 10th overall with one win - in the season-opening round at Oschersleben - to his name.

His new team Prema was only a guest presence in that series, but has already become ubiquitous in the Italian category, having swept its two seasons with Lance Stroll and Ralf Aron.

ADAC F4 has recently announced 46 entrants for the 2016 campaign, while the Italian series has 41 cars lined up for its Misano opener on April 9-10 - a week before the German series kicks off.

The two championships' calendars do not have any clashing dates this year.

Earlier this week, Schumacher and Prema posted the quickest overall time of the pre-season German F4 test at Oschersleben.
