Dan McMullen first North American driver invited to test new Super Renault V6 race car in Europe.
(Toronto, Ont.) - Following his great success in the newly formed North American Fran-Am Pro Championship in 2002 where Dan McMullen finished the season in second place, series Director Thierry Burckhart has announced that Dan is the first North American driver to be invited to test the new Formula Super Renault V6 race car in Europe some time near the end of January. The test will take place in either Italy or Portugal and the final decision on the date and location will be made known within the next week or so.
After returning to Canada from France in August last year, where Dan had been contesting the French National Formula Renault Championship with the Hexis Racing Team, he found renewed inspiration when he joined the Phillips Motorsports Race Team for the Fran-Am race at Mosport International Raceway near his home town of Gormley, Ontario, in which he finished in a strong second place to eventual series champion Bruno Spengler. This would become a familiar pattern with Dan finishing in second place a total of six times in seven races during the season. His effort, consistency, speed and professionalism was noticed by the organizers of the Fran-Am series and with the assistance of Renault Sport in France arrangements were put in motion for the test session to take place.
Upon learning of the test Dan said, " I am really looking forward to getting in the Formula Super Renault V6 and seeing what it can do. With everything that I have heard or read about the car I'm sure that it will be a great experience." A 3.5 liter 24 valve engine producing 320hp powers the Formula Super Renault V6, which will be known as the Fran-Am V6 when it is introduced in North America in 2004. It has a six speed sequential gearbox and paddle shifting as in Formula One cars, this being a first for a racecar at this level and elevates these cars up a notch over other similar formulas around the world, and weighs in at 560kg.
When the test is completed, work will begin in earnest to decide where Dan will be racing in 2003. At present, negotiations are in the works to obtain the necessary sponsorship for the up coming season and this will be the determining factor in his final decision on a series to contest. As each step up the motorsports ladder comes along, so does the cost to compete escalate and finding the needed corporate partnership becomes even more important so that Dan may continue in his quest to become a top professional race car driver and fulfill his dream of reaching the top.
