2000: "Hot" pole for Martinez in Mexico

Veracruz (Mexico) November 9. Under an agressive heat in Veracruz port, Havoline/Ray Ban driver David Martinez won his third pole of the year and is now en route to the historic first Formula Renault championship in Mexico.

Martinez made an strong drive and dominated the most dangerous circuit in Mexico, the 1.0 kilometer Super Jarocho circuit. The speedway does not pardon errors and the session saw a lot of drivers off the circuit and spinning off into other cars, but no one of crashed heavily into the barriers.

"We're close to obtaininf this title, we have forty points of difference over our closest pursuer in the championship, and with a triumph that gives you 30 points, we want win to extend our leadership", said the 21-year-old Martinez.

The Monterrey-based driver clocked a lap of 35.139 seconds (102.450 km/h). Martinez will have behind him another young Team GO driver, Hugo Oliveras, who stopped the clock in 35.247.

Weather as always in Veracruz was hard against drivers, over 35° centigrade was registered during the qualification session.

Eleven drivers are within a second of Martinez, so we can expect a close race tomorrow at Super Jarocho.
