Long delivers quick, solid drive in British Formula Renault opener.

BRANDS HATCH, Kent, UK - Californian Patrick Long delivered a quick, solid performance in the opening round of the Formula Renault UK Championship at Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit last weekend, qualifying seventh and finishing a strong fifth in his debut in the prestigious open-wheel formula.

Starting seventh on the grid out of 30 entries, the 20-year-old American Californian drove a fault-free race, moving up two spots and was closing in on fourth position when the checked flag fell. The race was won by Danny Watts of England, ahead of fellow Brits Mark McLoughlin and Lewis Hamilton.

"Qualifying seventh was a bit disappointing after being quicker in pre-season testing," Long explained from his home in Harrold, UK. "It was a rough week, but getting fifth place points is a good way to start the championship. With wings and downforce, it's more difficult to pass in Formula Renault than in Formula Ford, so being quick in qualifying is crucial. I'm looking forward to the next race at Oulton Park, where I won in Formula Ford."
