Daruvala focuses on Eurocup race wins as title hopes diminish

Force India protégé Jehan Daruvala says his aim in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 is to get as many race wins under his belt, with title chances now slim.

The Indian has had a mixed run in the Eurocup championship starting off with a podium in Race 1 at Aragon and eight races since then, he is yet to score a top three finish, thus paying a heavy price in the title battle.

With a gap 112 points between him and championship leader Lando Norris, the title hopes is all but over for Daurvala, who sits fifth in the standings.

“I'm a long way behind in the standings so I'm not focusing on the title,” the Indian teen said to Motorsport.com.

“I will just try to win as many races as I can from now on and hopefully I can catch Lando [Norris].

“I've had a few unlucky weekends in Eurocup from Motorland (Round 1) onwards and just could not convert it into results,” Daruvala explained his difficult run.

“In Monza the whole weekend was just bad luck because I was in the top three in all free practices. I put that weekend behind me and I came at Red Bull Ring strong.”

The Force India junior went on to finish fifth and seventh in the two races but fell behind the leading pack, as even fourth place Dorian Boccolacci is a further 61 points away.

While Daruvala lags behind in Eurocup, the Indian is leading the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC standings by five points, after taking his maiden win in the last round in Hungary.

No decision on future

Midway into 2016 season, it's a crucial decision making period so as to plan for next year. The Mumbai-based driver tested the Fortec’s European Formula 3 car in June.

When asked if any further talks have taken place, Daruvala reaffirmed that nothing has been decided yet regarding his future programme.

“It was an FIA F3 car it's always good to have days in the car, it was just testing to have more time in the car,” he said.

“I haven't had any plans to do any F3 races this year so I'll see how the season goes and make a decision later.”

While no decision has been made, the Indian had earlier mentioned that he expects to test in F3, Formula V8 3.5 and GP3, before making any future commitment.
