Van der Drift stays top

Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championship leader Chris Van der Drift (JD Motorsport) came out on top in both collective test sessions held today at Donington Park. The New Zealander was trailed by his team-mate Kasper Andersen and close rival Dani Clos (Jenzer Motorsport) at the top of the timesheets.

The Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0's thirty drivers were greeted by unusually clement weather this morning, as they took to a Donington track bathed in bright sunshine and blue skies. There are few changes worth noting for this weekend's line-up.

The most significant of these concerns the transfer of Atte Mustonen, who has left Koiranen Bros to join Jenzer Motorsport: "I came away from Istanbul as championship leader, but the Misano and Nurburgring meetings didn't go exactly as planned. I just wanted to try something different and I am pleased to have reached an agreement with Jenzer. I will now be able to compare my level against good quality team-mates like Dani Clos. If things go well this weekend, I think I can get back into the title race". Claudio Cantelli and Oliver Campos have also joined the Swiss team.

Walter Grubmuller (ex-Jenzer driver) has switched to Twincam Motorsport. At SL Formula Racing, German driver Bruno Fechner will now line up alongside the Russian Anton Nebiltskiy. Finally, the drive previously held by Adrian Zaugg at Cram Competition has now gone to British driver Oliver Oakes.

The scene is set for attention to focus on Martin Plowman (Prema Power Team), who will be competing in his first motorsport race on home soil. After a very successful karting career in France and Asia, he switched to the Eurocup this season: "The first few races were difficult because everything was new to me, the circuits, the car, the team, etc. I feel that things are getting better and better as the season progresses. Results are not as important to me as the experience I am acquiring in single-seater racing. I know that if I keep making progress that the results will come."

For the time being, the boss was once again Chris Van der Drift, who set the best time in each of the day's sessions. The JD Motorsport driver set the day's best time towards the end of the morning, in the first session: "We were quick to find the right setup for the car. There's not much else to say, really, other than it was a good day." His team-mate Kasper Andersen, who set the day's second best time, echoed Chris' view: "The car is very good no matter what the conditions, whether it has used tyres or new tyres. I think we will do very well in qualifying tomorrow."

Third-quickest driver Dani Clos remains patient: "We tried out a lot of different ideas on the car today. We still have a bit of work to do in order to analyze the data. But I think I'll be right up there fighting for pole position tomorrow morning."

Fifth and seventh respectively, Filipe Albuquerque (Motopark Academy) and Carlo Van Dam (SG Formula) were a little bit off their best today. Bertrand Baguette (Epsilon Euskadi) was however back to form behind the wheel of the single-seater in which he did so well in Zolder.
