LUCKLESS BRNO WEEKEND COSTS MP MOTORSPORT FIRST EUROCUP POLE

MP Motorsport endured terrible misfortune at Brno in the Czech Republic last weekend, 5th/6th June, during the third event of the 2010 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season -- a race meeting in which the team should rightfully have secured its first pole position in the pan-European championship.

Daniel De Jong was in tremendous form in round five and six qualifying where he managed to post the fastest time even though there were a number of interruptions. Late in the session the Dutch 17-year-old had an unfortunate excursion into the gravel but his earlier best was unchallenged so he secured pole position.

Post-qualifying though, officials opted to delete all of his lap times after De Jong's car was pushed out of the gravel trap by marshals.

Bitterly disappointed, the teenager had to start rounds five and six from the back of the grid but he delivered an astonishing performance, especially in the first encounter in which he carved his way through the order from 20th position into the top 10 on the opening lap alone!

Passing Bart Hylkema for ninth on lap four, De Jong gained another place from Hugo Valente on the following tour to take eighth position where he remained to the chequered flag -- finishing a mere 10th of a second behind Genis Oliv0x00e9.

In race two, De Jong made fantastic progress once again but he retired on the ninth lap due to unavoidable contact with Henrique Martins when the latter's car suddenly and unexpectedly slowed with a technical problem. Prior to this point, he had climbed from the back of the grid into 11th place.

Team manager Sander Dorsman said: "Daniel did an incredible job at Brno, the pole was his for sure and with his pace he could have challenged for wins. We were disappointed with the decision to delete his times from qualifying but we had to accept it so he had a tough job on his hands to start both races from the back of the grid. Overall, he did a fantastic job and deserved much more."

Ever-improving Kulmanen takes first Eurocup points finish Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 rookie Kalle Kulmanen produced his best qualifying performance of the 2010 season so far, securing 14th on the grid for both encounters, and the 18-year-old Finnish racer went on to take his maiden points finish during round six with a terrific drive.

Producing some excellent overtaking and dicing hard, Kulmanen came through the order well to take a deserved ninth place during the second race. In round five, he had an unfortunate moment on the grass which dropped him to 18th place where he remained to the flag.

Dorsman added: "Kalle had his best weekend so far in the Eurocup, he qualified very well and his race performances were fantastic. To score his first points is a real breakthrough moment so we're hoping for more during the next rounds at Magny-Cours. As a team we deserve some better luck next time and we're confident our drivers will deliver great performances once again."

MP Motorsport's third driver, Karl-Oscar Liiv had to miss the Brno event due to three essential school exams but he will be back in action alongside De Jong and Kulmanen for the seventh and eighth rounds on 19th/20th June at Magny-Cours in France.
