Da Costa and Magnussen equal firsts
Since the start of the season, Motopark Academy's Antonio Felix de Costa has been looking for his first pole position. Everything came together for the Portuguese driver when he qualified first at Nurburgring. Teammate Kevin Magnussen also claimed his first pole position and finds himself on the front row for the second race of the weekend.
Group B:
The drivers held off for a few minutes before taking to the track. The first fast lap was set by Epsilon Euskadi's Natanael Berthon, crowned French Formula Renault 2.0 champion a few days ago. SG Formula's Jean-Eric Vergne and Jenzer Motorsport's Nico Muller were the first to fight back. Berthon reclaimed his lead straight away, with a time of 1'58"545. Vergne and SG Formula's Miki Monras had their say at the end of the session as Vergne set the fastest time in 1'58"075, ahead of Monras, Berthon, Mullerand Epsilon Sport's Luciano Bacheta.
Group A:
As with Group B, the Groups A drivers waited getting stuck in. Epsilon Euskadi's Albert Costa and Antonio Felix da Costa wasted no time in showing what they were made of, monopolizing the top of the leaderboard. Behind them, Motopark Academy's Kuba Giermaziak, Epsilon Euskadi's Carlos Munoz, Kevin Magnussen and Miguel Otegui fought over third place. Ahead, the last word came from Albert Costa. The Catalan driver set a time of 1'57"798, while teammate Munoz finished the session by squeezing in between him and Antonio Felix da Costa.
SuperPole:
Kevin Magnussen was the first driver to enter provisional pole position ahead of teammates Adrian Quaife-Hobbs and Kuba Giermaziak, while the favourites bided their time in the pits. Motopark Academy's Luis Derani and Nico Muller launched the final wave of improvements. The the time had come and Jean-Eric Vergne took advantage to climb in to provisional pole with a lap of 1'58"495. His rivals weren't prepared to take this lying down. Da Costa entered the top of the timesheet in 1'58"000, while Kevin Magnussen took second place. In the closing laps, the action heated up further. Albert Costa took back second place, but nobody could stop Antonio Felix da Costa from savouring his first pole position of the year in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Kevin Magnussen also put on a show to set the second fastest flying lap, allowing him to start from pole position in the second race of the weekend. For Vergne, things went less well as he walked away with 7th and 5th places on each of the two grids.
Quote, unquote:
Antonio Felix da Costa: "For me, it's perfect to start from pole today. The first session didn't go too well this morning, I wasn't happy, but I didn't let it bother me and really went for it in the SuperPole. I need to drive these two races without thinking too much about Albert Costa and Jean-Eric Vergne."
Kevin Magnussen: "I'm over the moon, it's hard to put into words. This pole is my reward for all our work this season. I've been learning constantly, I've got stronger and this is given me high hopes for the future."
Albert Costa: "My car is good, I'm on the pace, but I had to overtake a car on my fastest lap in the SuperPole which cost me some time. Nevertheless, with two second place starts I'm in a strong position. I just need to make the most of it in the race."
