One for you, one for me
Since the start of the season, Motopark Academy's Antonio Felix da Costa and Epsilon Euskadi's Albert Costa have taken it in turns to lead the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0's overall standings on a regular basis. Silverstone marks the season's halfway point, with just two points separating the Portuguese and Spanish drivers. Will the head-to-head battle for first place continue at Silverstone? At home, Briton Adrian Quaife-Hobbs (Motopark Academy) will be one driver to watch closely, as he will be trying harder than ever.
When Albert Costa finishes a race in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, he's always on the podium and very often in first place. With three wins and one third place, the statistics speak for themselves. But two meetings without points have cost the Spaniard dear and thanks to his extraordinary consistency, Antonio Felix da Costa has now pulled ahead. At Budapest, for the first time this season, Albert Costa left a meeting without a win. From Silverstone on, the Catalonian must put his house in order if he is to reclaim control of the championship at this turning point in the season. Always in the points, Antonio Felix da Costa has set foot on the podium four times, his worst result being a sixth place. Except that the Portuguese is still looking for his first win in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Winning at Silverstone would be the best way for him to shore up his lead. To do this he will need to sharpen up in qualifying, which is currently his Achilles' heel. But with around fifteen cars in the SuperPole within a second of each other, qualifying is always a tricky exercise in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Antonio Felix da Costa must contend with his teammates, in particular Adrian Quaife-Hobbs. Fourth in the points, the British driver returns to his favourite track more motivated than ever, spurred on by his second position in Hungary, his best result in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 to date. In front of his home crowd, the Kentish driver is dreaming of a first win on home soil. However, Motopark Academy's Marco Sorensen, winner at the Hungaroring, and Kevin Magnussen are equally in within a serious chance of winning. Behind the leading duo, the positions have tightened somewhat. In third, SG Formula's Miki Monras is only ten points ahead of teammate Jean-Eric Vergne, who currently lies sixth. Winner of the first race in Hungary, Vergne will need to keep up his good form to catch up with the leaders. He will also have to take risks if he is to win again and make up for lost time. Having taken part in some serious racing since the start of the season, Jenzer Motorsport's Nicolas Müller and IQuick Valencia's Patrick Kronenberger must both build on their past performances. The Silverstone circuit, which is both fast and technically challenging, and where drivers must find a perfect balance in their car's set-up, should suit these two attackers who are always looking to overtake. New drivers will also be swelling the ranks of Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 at Silverstone. Finland's Matias Laine, who joins Motopark Academy, will be making his debut appearance in the discipline, as will Estonian Karl Oscar Liiv, driving for MP Motorsport. Already in contention at Spa-Francorchamps, the young Brazilian Luis Derani will once more line up for Motopark Academy.
