The teams' title almost within Tech 1 Racing's grasp

While the drivers' crown was awarded at Silverstone, the Formula 2.0 Eurocup teams' title will be decided in Barcelona. Tech 1 Racing has a 30-point lead before the final round, so the Toulouse-based squad is well placed to win its first crown in the Formula 2.O Eurocup in its very first season in the championship.

Arthur Pic arrived at Silverstone 21 points behind the Formula 2.O Eurocup leader Kevin Korjus, so the Frenchman had to finish in front of the Estonian in each race to keep his title hopes alive. In England, qualifying decided the outcome. "In free practice, everything went off well," said Simon Abadie, the Tech 1 Racing team manager. "We were on the' pace even without putting on new tyres. Unfortunately, Arthur Pic went off in qualifying on Saturday morning."

This led to a red flag and the Tech 1 Racing driver's fastest lap was cancelled. This meant he lined up in thirteenth place on the grid for Saturday's race and in twentieth on Sunday. His rival for the title set pole for both events.

Aaro Vaino set the fifth and second-fastest times. Hugo Valente was forced to miss free practice because of exams, and he ended up in fourteenth and thirteenth places on the grids for the two rounds.

The first race was a quiet one for the Tech 1 Racing drivers. Vaino started fifth which was where he finished. Valente saw the flag in ninth place, and Pic fought his way up to seventh.

On Sunday, Pic did even better and stormed up through the field from twentieth place to finish eighth. But it was not good enough to prevent Korjus from bagging the title before Barcelona. Vainio fluffed his getaway and fell back to fifth where he finished. Valente was eliminated in a collision at the start.

While this weekend was not great one for the three Tech 1 Racing drivers in terms of results, they were in the rhythm as Abadie explained. "Once again our cars were on the pace. Aaro was on his fastest lap in qualifying and was on his way to pole just when the red flag was shown. If Arthur hadn't gone off he was capable of doing the same. Hugo didn't race in the free sessions and he did a great job in qualifying. So in terms of performance our cars were very quick at Silverstone. The accident decided the drivers' title, but that's not the end of the story. Arthur's had a great season with seven pole positions and four victories so far. He lost the most points on the Motorland Aragon circuit. After that he was very consistent, and I hope he's going to win again in Barcelona. Aaro was once more among the quickest. He just messed things up a little on Sunday.

"We're thirty points in front in the teams' title chase, so to lose it we'll really have to put on a very poor performance. It's an important title to reward everybody's hard work. To win it in our first year in the championship would be a stunning achievement, and we can be proud of our drivers and the whole team if we pull it off. To do this we'll have to be quick and consistent in Barcelona. I'd like Aaro to finish the season on a high note with a victory, and also for Hugo to have another podium finish."
