Speed Sets The Pace
Qualifying 1.
Once again, the drivers of the Eurocup FR 2000 played the waiting game, with none of them eager to be first to head out on the track for the first qualifying session. Mindful of their tyres, the competitors hoped someone else would head out and `sweep' the track. In the end, the proceedings got underway by Russia's
Aleshin (Lukoil Racing Team) and Baibodorov. The Finnish driver Leirilaakso was first to set a reference time, with just eleven minutes remaining in the session.
Then suddenly it was all go, Speed grabbing pole position on his second flying lap in a time that would remain unbeaten, despite the efforts of Maldonado (Cram Competition), who pushed too hard and spun off, forcing the stewards to show the red flag.
Second place on the grid went to Kochem ahead of Kofler, with Fleming making a final charge in the dying minutes to move up past Pagenaud. The Frenchman has been dogged by mechanical trouble all weekend, following his broken engine in open practise. Once more, the leaders have set themselves up at the head of the field.
Qualifying 2.
With the sky turning grey and the temperatures cooling to just 12° in the air and 18° on the track, the gloomy weather seemed to dampen the spirits of the drivers for the second qualifying session of the day. Finally, with just eight minutes remaining, the cars came out on the track.
Tactics and strategy play a key role in qualifying, as shown by Speed, who waited patiently for Pagenaud to make the first move before getting behind the wheel. Meijer set the first fastest time, then along came Speed to take pole position once more. Pagenaud finally seemed to find the right pace, taking the second fastest lap time in front of Meijer, Fleming, Kochem and Kofler. -renault-
