No Limits for Speed
The pace at which Scott Speed is notching up race wins and pole positions is starting to worry the rest of the field. This year the American has been conquering everything in his path, with his four wins in a row placing him at the top of the championship leaderboard and racing ahead in the fight for the title.
In round five at Brno, Scott Speed (Motopark Academy) made it look like a demonstration. By the end of the weekend, the overall leadership had changed hands, the young American driver now standing twelve points clear of France's Pagenaud in the standings thanks to his two runaway race wins.
Despite his problems earlier in the season at Valencia, where he was disqualified from race two due to a non-compliant car, Speed has wasted no time in getting back into gear and back on track. His rise started at Magny- Cours, where he took third place in race two, and ever since then its been victory all the way.
With the 2004 season now turning towards a sprint finish, Speed is confidently leading the way. Already impressive over winter testing, only Pagenaud seems capable of stopping his one man show, at least in the standings. The Frenchman is the only driver among the leading contenders to have taken points in every race, though he himself has had his share of race hitches.
Behind these top two come a watchful trio: Kochem, Kofler and Maldonado have not given up and are still in the running. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for France's Moreau, who enjoyed an excellent start to the season, but whose team (SG Formula) has decided to focus its efforts on the French national championship. With Moreau falling back in the overall standings, Speed is truly the one that the drivers need to watch and beat.
At Donington this weekend, we should also keep a look out for the Fortec and Manor drivers, who will be flying a variety of flags, especially given the presence of China's Cong Fu. With their knowledge of the track, we may well be seeing them cause a stir in qualifying, adding even more spice to the mix in round six.
