Big Line-Up for the Spa Showdown!

There were no major championship upsets at Donington, as Scott Speed (Motopark Academy) added to his lead over championship rival Pagenaud, albeit by fewer points than the qualifiers had us believe. For round seven of the Eurocup at Spa, there will be just one race on the agenda.

Race one at Donington saw Pilet and Moreau put on an amazing show, while Pagenaud climbed his way up to the leaders despite his damaged car. But after the chequered flag, a stewards' enquiry resulted in a 20-second penalty for no fewer than 19 drivers for their late arrival at the pre-grid assembly point. This affected Pagenaud most of all, as it cost the Frenchman his fourth place finish. In the second race of the weekend the drivers from the British championship, entered as wildcards for the Eurocup, put in a spectacular performance on the slippery track, as Conway, currently leading his home series, showed us the extent of his talent. Only Moreau was able to match his pace, while fending off Di Resta who took the third step on the podium.

Still at the top of the overall standings is Scott Speed, who increases his lead over second-place Pagenaud (220 points to 198), with Moreau lying in third with 146 points. Kofler and Kochem's mixed fortunes at Donington drop them back slightly, but anything is possible at the Belgian rollercoaster. All eyes will be on the single race scheduled for the forthcoming round, in the series that has given us nothing but thrills since the start of the season. And to add to the excitement, an enormous line-up of no fewer than 40 drivers will be taking to the Spa circuit, enhanced by drivers from the French and British championships.

Two local drivers will also be joining us, in the form of D'Ambrosio (Graff Racing), who is back after a period focussing on the French Eurocup series. Countryman Den Tandt who took part in the last three races of last year's FR V6, taking a podium finish and 62 points will also be racing in Motopark Academy colours. He is definitely one to watch at Spa, and may well be battling it out with the leaders Speed, Pagenaud, Moreau, Kofler, Kochem and, though further back overall, Fleming.

All of which promises another fine race, in the unique setting of Spa- Francorchamps. And after the Belgian round, just four races remain to decide who will be the 2004 champion.

Let battle commence!
