A win and the title for Van Lagen

Jaap Van Lagen (Equipe Verschuur) has taken his third victory of the season in Barcelona. This means the Dutchman succeeds Jan Heylen as the holder of the Eurocup Megane Trophy title. A second place for Matthieu Lahaye earns Tech 1 Racing the Team title. Cesar Campanico took the third podium spot to steal third place in the overall standings away from Dayraut.

It was none other than Jaap Van Lagen (Equipe Verschuur) who got off to the best start from pole and led the field into the first bend ahead of Matthieu Lahaye. Behind, things were already getting pretty heated: Alessandro Balzan (Oregon Team) span and collided with Jean-Philippe Dayraut (Epsilon Euskadi). Then, at the next bend, it was the turn of Renaud Kuppens (Thierry Boutsen Racing) to rule himself out of proceedings.

Van Lagen completed lap one with a lead of 1''4 over Gabillon, who had managed to get the better of Lahaye. They were followed by Campanico, Lorgere-Roux and Meichtry. Clearly faster than all his rivals, Van Lagen seemed to have no trouble increasing his lead in the opening laps.

Meanwhile, Bruce Lorgere-Roux was racing minus his front bonnet, but it didn't seem to be holding him back. The Tech 1 driver was busy attacking Cesar Campanico to try and take fourth. Meichtry seemed to be finding it difficult to stay with the pace: the Swiss driver was soon swallowed up by his countryman Jonathan Hirschi.

Lorgere-Roux finally found a way past Campanico at the start of lap five in a move reminiscent of how Mansell made it past Senna in 1991. But Bruce wasn't going to stop there, going on to pass both his teammate Lahaye and Gabillon!

Then, on lap eight, it was Lahaye who overtook Gabillon, who in turn found himself under threat from Campanico. By this stage of the race, Van Lagen already had a 4''5 lead over the chasing group.

One lap later, Lorgere-Roux took a detour via the gravel trap, managing to rejoin in fifth place between Campanico and Hirschi. Further back down the field, Pedro Petiz (Iris Racing) and Andreas Mayerl (Sesterheim Racing) were fighting it out tooth-and-nail for eleventh!

On the penultimate lap, Cesar Campanico made his move on Frederic Gabillon to earn himself the third podium spot.

Jaap Van Lagen: "The win may look easy for those looking on from outside. I got off to a very good start and was soon able to open up a little lead. I really worked hard, as I did in qualifying to keep putting in quick laps. I'm really happy for the team who haven't put a single foot wrong this season. And again I have to thank Bernhard Ten Brinke for letting me use his car after my accident yesterday."

Matthieu Lahaye: "I'm really happy for the team who have really earned this title. As for me personally, I really lost the championship in Misano and at the Nurburgring. Jaap drove the perfect race here today. He was the best out there."

Cesar Campanico: "It's good to be back on the podium! We made some modifications to the setup but it didn't make a decisive difference. I wasn't the fastest out there but I managed to stay in touch. I hope to be right up there with pace tomorrow."
