In pursuit of Jaap

Jaap Van Lagen (Equipe Verschuur) remains the only driver to have finished in the points at every race this season. He therefore heads for Donington with a lead which, without being comfortable, means that he remains in control ahead of the chasing pack led by César Campaniço (Racing for Belgium), Jean-Philippe Dayraut (Epsilon Euskadi) and Matthieu Lahaye (Tech 1 Racing).

Fiercely contested from start to finish, the races at the Nürburgring were eventually won by Matthieu Lahaye and César Campaniço. But Jaap Van Lagen made it onto the podium in each race, thus collecting precious points which have left him with a clear lead in the Eurocup overall standings. Meanwhile, Jean-Philippe Dayraut's progress has stalled. He has picked up only a few points, as he has struggled to find the right setup.

With six races to go, Van Lagen is eleven points ahead of Campaniço. A lead that could be said to be both fragile and yet pretty solid, given the consistency of the Dutchman and the fact that he can afford not to go for the win at any cost.

Lying fourth behind Ludovic Badey, who has had to end his season prematurely, Dayraut must return to winning ways. After Donington, the Frenchman will have the advantage of racing at «home» in Le Mans, so he is not out of the title race just yet...

He will need to keep an eye on the Tech 1 Racing drivers, however, who were in impressive form in Germany. After winning his first race of the season, Matthieu Lahaye is now only two points behind Dayraut. And his team-mate Bruce Lorgeré-Roux proved that he can now be expected to be in contention to win races on regular basis.

Behind the top six, there is a small gap to the other drivers fighting it out for places in the lower half of the top 10: Pedro Petiz (Iris Racing), Ralph Meichtry (Race Performance) and Renaud Kuppens (Thierry Boutsen Racing).

With a lead of more than thirty points on Lorgeré-Roux, Matthieu Lahaye is dominating the Junior championship in quite spectacular fashion. It is hard to see who could prevent the Tech 1 Racing drivers from securing a one-two in the category. Team manager Simon Abadie's ambitions extend beyond the Junior championship he has set his drivers the target of winning the overall Team title!

The other Junior drivers, however, have yet to throw in the towel. Luigi Ferrara (Oregon Team) hopes to rediscover the form, and a bit of luck, that have deserted him in recent races. Miguel Freitas (Racing for Belgium) and Pedro Petiz have taken full advantage of his dip in form to close the gap to just a few points, after a good weekend in Germany.

The only British driver to feature regularly in the Eurocup, James Kirkpatrick (Epsilon Euskadi), currently lies sixth in the Junior standings. A position that he is more than capable of improving upon, given the potential he showed in Zolder and Misano, where he finished in the top five in the overall race results.
