A first for Campanico!
After starting from pole, Cesar Campanico (Racing for Belgium) led the race from start to finish to secure his first win of the season. The Portuguese driver came home ahead of Renaud Derlot (TP Competition) and Nicolas Gianniberti (Oregon Team). Marc Benz (Iris Racing) took yet another victory in the Junior category.
Cesar Campanico got off to the best start from pole position to finish ahead of Renaud Derlot, Jean-Christophe Ravier (Epsilon Euskadi), Jan Heylen (Racing for Belgium) and Nicola Gianniberti.
At the end of lap one, Wim Coekelbergs (Racing for Belgium) and Philippe Mace (TP Competition) both span their Meganes, but they kept on going as all good gentlemen drivers should.
By lap two, Nicola Gianniberti had already put in a superb overtaking manoeuvre to pass Jan Heylen. Victor F. Roca (Saturn Motorsport) was another driver to spin, but he too kept going. The Spanish drivers just did not seem having any luck, as Angel Burgueño (Team Elias) was forced to come into the pits after hitting a tyre wall.
Ludovic Badey (Pouchelon Racing), who had started from the back row of the grid, made a magnificent comeback to finish in 11th, just out of the points.
As the laps went by, Cesar Campanico managed to put a few car lengths between himself and Renaud Derlot. Derlot himself remained under threat from a group consisting of Jean-Christophe Ravier, Nicola Gianniberti, Jan Heylen, Frederic Gabillon (Team Lompech Sport) and Jeffrey Van Hooydonk (Thierry Boutsen Racing).
A bit further back, Sebastien Dhouailly (Team Lompech Sport), Andreas Mayerl (Sesterheim Racing) and Antonio Aristi (Epsilon Euskadi) were involved in a splendid battle. Ludovic Badey lost no time in joining the fray.
Just past the midway point in the race, the three leaders found themselves back together. Campanico, Derlot and Ravier were still in control of proceedings. It clearly wasn't Team Elias' race, as Luis Miguel Reyes span his car.
Ravier was soon back under pressure from Gianniberti: the two former World Karting Champions in a scrap for third place! While sitting back in eighth, Jeffrey Van Hooydonk was then let down by a mechanical failure. This allowed Juan Morales (Hervas Racing) to move up one place, as he himself was lapped by the leaders. Meanwhile, Gianniberti had finally got the better of Ravier.
On the penultimate lap, Jan Heylen fell back to ninth to the delight of Renaud Kuppens and Marc Benz. Kuppens even pulled right back up to Simon Abadie, but was unable to nick 6th place from the boss of the Tech 1 Racing team.
It was also tricky race for the Equipe Verschuur drivers: rookie Jeroen Reijntjens made two serious errors and Bernard Ten Brinke ran off while fighting it out with Santiago Porteiro (Racing for Belgium).
Cesar Campanico: "I'm pleased to have got this result after my troublesome weekend in Bilbao. It was very important for me to take pole here as it's very difficult to overtake on this circuit. I knew that Renaud would find it hard to attack me and so I was able to control the race."
Renaud Derlot: "It's a good result for me to finish second after starting from the third row. I attacked hard and drove a good race."
Nicola Gianniberti: "I wasn't very strong in qualifying but my car was great for the race. I'm very happy with this podium finish."
