New Megane Trophy hits the track!
Barely six months after it made its first track outing in front of the World Series by Renault crowds, a new chapter in the history of the Eurocup Megane Trophy is set to be written in Barcelona, as New Megane Trophy races for the first time. Who will be the first to taste glory on board this new "high-performance" hatchback? We'll find out on April 18
Since its creation for the inaugural World Series by Renault in 2005, Megane Trophy has enthralled over 2.5 million spectators. New Megane Trophy is a worthy successor, bearing all the hallmarks that made the original model such a success. It boasts higher performance levels than its predecessor thanks to mechanical and aerodynamic enhancements, but perhaps New Megane Trophy's most striking feature is its radical, sleek lines, inspired by Megane R.S. With enhanced performance levels and stable operating costs, New Megane Trophy sets new standards for high-performance sports hatchbacks.
Clearly, New Megane Trophy has already won over the drivers, as proven by a twenty-two strong line-up of cars for Eurocup Megane Trophy. New Megane Trophy's seductive power seems to work just as well with female drivers as with the men. Margot Laffite, daughter of Jacques Laffite, and Marlène Broggi are, for example, set to share driving duties in a Boutsen Energy Racing car. Two welcome additions to the field, who are very determined to make life difficult for the championship's twenty-one male drivers!
Dimitri Enjalbert (Boutsen Energy Racing) and Jonathan Hirschi (TDS Racing) were the men in form during collective testing at Barcelona and at the Paul Ricard HTTT. Team-mates last season, both men are now among the favourites for the title. They will face stiff competition from the talented young drivers at their former team, Tech 1 Racing.
In order to attempt to win a fourth Team title, Tech 1 Racing is relying on young talent. 23 year-old Matthieu Cheruy will play the role of older brother to 20 year-old Anthony Tardieu and 21 year-old Nick Catstburg. The latter pair will be taking part in saloon-car racing for the first time this season after competing in Formula Renault 2.0 last year. They will need to find their footing in the Eurocup Megane Trophy, but they proved during collective testing that they have already got to grips with New Megane Trophy.
Returning to the category in which he won a race in 2007, Mike Verschuur (McGregor by Equipe Verschuur) is another young driver in with a chance of the title. But the more experienced drivers shouldn't be overlooked. Fabrice Walfisch, back racing with Team Lompech Sport and Bernhard Ten Brinke (Equipe Verschuur), a Eurocup Megane Trophy regular since its start in 2005, are both keen to show the young upstarts that they still are a force to be reckoned with.
Jean-Philippe Madonia (TDS) will be defending his title in the Gentlemen Drivers category. His close rivals from last year will be there again to try and knock him off his pedestal! Hoevert Vos (Verschuur Autosport), Bernard Delhez (Team Lompech Sport), Pierre Hirschi (Oregon Team), Harrie Kolen (Verschuur Autosport), Jean-Charles Miginiac (Team Lompech Sport), Angelo Baiguera (Brixia Autosport) and Rafael Unzurrunzaga will all be out for revenge! Two drivers new to the category will join their ranks: Jeroen Schothorst (McGregor by Equipe Verschuur) and Giovanni Longo (Oregon Team).
