The Battle of Britain
Round six at Donington marks the half-way point in the championship, and as things stand it is too close to say who is favourite to lift the title. After a storming start to the season, Ryan Sharp (139 pts, Jenzer Motorsport) leads the way overall, with Mondini (EuroInternational) in second just 14 points behind. Next comes Belicchi (AFC Motorsport) with 104 points, with Jani (Dams) right behind him on 101 points.
This weekend, the Eurocup championship heads North to Donington for the `Battle of Britain'. With five rounds already behind us, we still have ten races to go and its anyone's guess whose name will end up on the trophy. Neel Jani's catastrophic start to the 2004 campaign now seems to be behind him, the Swiss driver taking three poles in a row, two wins and three fastest lap times from the last meetings. All this has brought him up to fourth overall, but could Jani be the one to watch in the second half of the season?
The pressure's now on for Ryan Sharp, whose consistency saw him dominate early in the championship. And while the Scotsman seems to be flying lower these days, he nevertheless has a 14 point advantage over Giorgio Mondini (EuroInternational) in the overall standings, and racing at home this weekend will surly boost his determination. Mondini himself has four podium finishes and two race wins to his credit, and is regularly among the top finishers.
With his regularity and ability to turn luck into success, Belicchi has so far enjoyed victory at Monza and podium honours on two other occasions. His experience and calm definitely make him one to watch, as he will snatch any opportunity that comes his way on the track.
Not forgetting the championship outsiders, most notably Robert Bell, the protégé of David Price and currently fifth overall. The Englishman still has his sights on the title, and this weekend will be hoping for a good result on home soil. As will his countryman, Robbie Kerr (Victory Eng. SpA), whose attacking style means he never fails to seize any chance to score points, and who will be out for a pole and a win at Donington.
Added to this list is Germany's Sven Barth (Interwetten.com), who has taken points in every race and took an amazing victory in Monaco.
Mathematically the title is within the reach of a number of drivers, making this round particularly special, especially as it'll all take place in the homeland of motorsport.
