Jani Shows His Hand at Monte Carlo
Despite hitting the sidewall and ending his qualifying session in a spin, Switzerland's Neel Jani (Dams) took pole here on Saturday in front of the rookie Sven Barth (Interwetten.com). Third on the grid will be Mondini (EuroInternational), who continues his excellent start to the season, despite running wide off the track at the swimming pool turn.
Pole position at last for Jani, who has had his share of bad luck in the season so far. But on Monaco's demanding circuit he gave us proof, were it ever needed, that he remains one of the strongest drivers in this year's line-up. His experience and talent put him at the front of the grid for Sunday's race, after a session in which pole changed hands many times before Barth, Mondini and Jani took control.
The young German driver from Interwetten.com continues to make good progress in FR V6, with today's second place a testimony to the excellent work by the Austrian team. Excitement was high among the Eurocup drivers in the 40- minute qualifying session; a little too high on occasions, as Mondini and Jani spun out, meaning things had to be halted to pick up the pieces. More wreakage came from Shimoda, who destroyed his car.
After Jani, Barth and Mondini came Belicchi (AFC Motorsport) in fourth, and Sharp, whose times improved with every lap, and Mexico's Martinez Leon, who was very happy with his performance and, he later confessed, the chance to race on this very special circuit.
So no major surprises in qualifying, but certainly a lot of action, especially from Lorgere Roux (Dams), who hit the barrier at the Casino. The young Frenchman seemed shaken by the impact and was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Monte Carlo's reputation as an exceptional and unforgiving street circuit remains intact. And the slightest error, especially at the Casino, can cost a driver dear! <pre> Qualifying session, ranking of the session 1) Jani Dams 1'30''406 2) Barth Interwetten.com 1'30''518 3) Mondini EuroInternational 1'30''721 4) Belicchi AFC Motorsport 1'30''905 5) Sharp Jenzer Motorsport 1'31''062 6) Martinez Leon Cram Competition 1'31''065 7) Shimoda David Price Racing 1'31''250 8) Kerr Victory Eng.
