Maiden victory for Van Lagen
A truly unexpected podium on Saturday as Van Lagen (Interwetten.com), starting Motopark Oschersleben from the front row, took victory in the Grand Race ahead of Mondini (EuropInternational) and Pasini (Victory Eng.). An impressive performance from the Dutchman, who takes his first win of the season, and in style.
With Lopez (Dams) right beside him and Jani (Dams) right behind, Van Lagen must have felt the pressure going into turn one. But in fact the two team mates' races were all but over just a few hundred meters further. Neck and neck with the Argentinean going into the first braking point, here's how the race winner saw things: "I braked as late as possible and so did Lopez. But he was on the dirty side of the track and lost it. After that I went as hard as I could to pull out a lead."
After his less than perfect start, Jani pushed hard to pull back up to the top. But he made contact with Proetto (EuroInternational), putting paid to the Italian's race and sending Jani right down to 14th.
At the front, things were heating up. Quick from the lights, Danielsson (SRTS) was lapping in second before stopping on lap four. The is worked to the advantage of Belicchi (AFC Motorsport), who moved up to the number two spot ahead of Bell (David Price Racing) and Campaniço (Cram Compétition).
As we approached the pitstop section of the race, it was still Van Lagen in the lead followed by Belicchi, Bell, Campaniço, Mondini and Sharp. But the race order was soon to be greatly changed. Belicchi and Bell came in on lap 12 for their tyre change, with Van Lagen, Mondini and Pasini doing likewise on the following lap.
Problems with his rear wheel ended Montanari's race, and on lap 15 it was Van Lagen from Belicchi, Mondini, Pasini and Sharp. But Belicchi was given a drive through penalty for speeding in the pitlane, ending his hopes of a podium finish.
This moved Mondini up to second with Pasini in third, while out front Van Lagen enjoyed a comfortable 10.7 second cushion over his closest rival.
This allowed the Dutchman to bring it home for his first race win and only the second for his team, after Barth's victory in Monaco.
It was a great result for Mondini, finishing in third ahead of Sharp and adding to his lead in the overall standings. Jani managed to pull back up to 8th, moving a step away from the title but keeping it still mathematically within his reach. Especially as he starts on pole in tomorrow's Super Sprint.
