Jani still gunning for the title

Despite his misfortunes this season, Neel Jani (Dams) is still the only driver to have taken four race wins in the 2004 edition of FR V6, keeping him well and truly in the running for the title. And while he'll have his work cut out to catch championship leader Mondini, currently 42 points ahead, Jani's hopes remain intact.

At the chequered flag it was Jani from Britain's Ryan Sharp (Jenzer Motorsport) and Campanico (Cram Competition), which means Mondini maintains his number one spot in the overall standings, despite being forced to retire earlier after coming together with Barth. But his lead over second-place Sharp is now just two points, which takes it right down to the wire in this year's final round in Dubai on October 6-8.

It was an all-Dams front row for the Indy start to Sunday's Super Sprint, in what promised to be a superb show. But in the end Lopez was unable to match Jani and was overtaken by Van Lagen and Sharp. This paved the way for 22 laps of incredible demonstration racing by Jani. "I think I've finally shown what I'm capable of," he said later, "I've made some mistakes in the past, but I've been mostly dogged by bad luck. Right now there's still hope, and it's not over till it's over."

Out on the track Jani was untouchable, controlling the race like a master. Behind him, Van Lagen was pushing hard, followed by Sharp and Campanico. But Lopez was forced to call it a day on lap two after running off the track.

Behind Campanico came Belicchi, another championship hopeful, while further back Mondini continued to struggle. And as Barth tried to get past him on lap six, the two cars touched and Mondini's race was cut short. That's motor racing, despite the Swiss Italian's fury. From here on it the positions were settled, Jani bringing it home for his fourth race victory.

Next stop Dubai for the climax of this year's championship. Hard to imagine a more exciting finale!
