Western Union Canada Joins Gelles For Toronto Molson Indy Week-end

Front Royal, Virginia. -- Western Union of Canada, the money transfer people, have joined Gelles Racing as the team is traveling to Canada for the first round of the Canada Cup at Molson Indy Toronto. The North American Formula Renault Canada Cup series comprises the next three rounds: the Molson Indy races in Toronto and Vancouver as well as the Grand-Prix de Trois-Rivières. This coming weekend, Gelles will have it's FR-2000 spec cars racing around Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto. Brandon Thomas, Michael Yager, Renato Jader and newcomer Chris Souliotis will attack the 1.755 mile street circuit on the shores of Lake Ontario.

"We are very happy to have Western Union Canada join us and give very talented young drivers the opportunity to race at a prestigious venue like the premier Canadian Molson Indy race in Toronto", said team owner Robert Gelles. "Western Union has been involved in motor racing for a long time", said A.J Hanna, Regional V.P and General Manager for Western Union financial services in Canada. I think Western Union and Gelles Racing have the same winning attitude, may it be in business or motorsport. We look forward to more business opportunities in the future."

Two Western Union drivers

Brandon Thomas from London, Ontario is back in his #2 Tenfore car while Renato Jader will steer the #4 Western Union car. Both drivers are eager to race in Toronto. For Thomas, who was born in Etobicoke, this is a dream come true: "I was born a few miles from there and part of my passion for racing comes from the Molson Indy. I have raced many laps in my mind there but Friday will be for real." Renato Jader will seek revenge this weekend after coming so close to winning in Watkins Glen. The Sao Paulo wonder boy is looking for his first victory in North America Formula Renault: "I like short tracks with concrete walls all around. This is where you can find your limits faster. I want to get my first win in 2004 for Western Union."

Mid-America with Yager

"Michael Yager has come a long way from his first presence in Sebring in the Winter championship, adds Gelles. The quality of his driving has improved round after round and his fourth place finish at the Glen says it all. I think we can expect the #3 Mid-America Motorworks car to be very quick again this weekend after the great testing day Michael has had in Pennsylvania recently." Michael now lies seventh place in the standings and is also the top rookie.

GT Champion Souliotis from Vancouver

Twice a GT Canadian Champion, Chris Souliotis will start his first official single seater race in Toronto, but the Vancouver Island resident has raced Porsches for many years, earning the Canadian GT championship in 2002 and 2003. Chris has been racing for almost a decade and would like to start his own team in the future. Obviously, Chris is looking forward to his home town race in Vancouver.

The North American Formula Renault series will be part of the Molson Indy race card starting this Friday morning with practice and completing the weekend with a 30-minute race on Sunday afternoon immediately following Champ Car. The 2004 North America Formula Renault Pro series is sanctioned by Grand American Road Racing and organized by Race Team Promotions. Gelles Racing is sponsored by Mid-America Motorworks and USA Today. You can visit the Gelles web site at: www.gellesracing.com
