North American Formula Renault 2000 Prepares for 2004 season

Organizers of the North American Formula Renault 2000 Championship have been hard at work in the last month in preparation for the inaugural running of the internationally-recognized category this season, which will get underway in just over two weeks time at Phoenix International Raceway on the weekend of April 8-10 for the Grand-Am Phoenix 250.

The short time frame has provided many challenges, but RaceTeam Promotions, the official promoter for the North American Formula Renault Championships, were encouraged by the successful Formula Renault Winter Invitational and are using that success to build on for the 2004 season.

"The Winter Invitational was a great opportunity for us to get everything in motion for the summer championship," said John Kolody, RaceTeam Promotions President. "It was a strong platform to show what could be done and has helped us generate significant interest toward the Formula Renault category."

Preparations have indeed been a whirlwind for series officials, as the agreement with Renault Sport, which officially launched the series, didn't enter the final stages of completion until late in the winter.

"Formula Renault North America didn't exist until February 15th, so it has been a very busy time for us as we plan for the 2004 season," continued Kolody. "Establishing a strong schedule was an obvious and absolute priority for us and we are excited about the venues we will be visiting this season."

Developing a schedule has been just one of the many tasks, though, as work on finalizing the prize package, the rulebook, and getting the right staff in place, have kept RaceTeam Promotions officials busy.

"Creating a rules package that insures the parity of the competition was another priority for us, and with that all set, we are focusing on some of the other elements of our package, including developing sponsorship and working on the television element, and we are hoping to make some announcements regarding those things soon," said Kolody.

The North American Formula Renault Championships are sanctioned by Grand American, and provide a ladder for drivers to develop their talent, with a full in-house open-wheel progression available. The 2004 season will get underway April 8-10 at Phoenix International Raceway.

The Formula Renault V6 Championship is the top rung on the North American Formula Renault Championship ladder, which also includes the North American Formula Renault 1600 Championship and the North American Formula Renault 2000 Championship. The Formula Renault V6 is expected to make its North American competition debut in the latter stages of the2004 North American Formula Renault 2000 season.
