Ingham Heats Up 2 Liter Points Battle at Buttonwillow
Skerlong Becomes 1600 Champion
By Travis Braun
The Odyssey Motorsports boys, Seth Ingham and Carl Skerlong, were once again the headliners at Buttonwillow Raceway Park on October 8th and 9th in the Formula TR Pro Series. Ingham crossed the finish line first in both 2 liter races, pulling out to a 17 point lead over Derek Sabol; while Skerlong wrapped up the 1600 championship one race early by winning on Saturday, and finishing second to Adam Davis on Sunday.
Saturday's 2 liter race was the setting for one of the most intense battles of the season. Pole sitter Seth Ingham relinquished the lead to Sabol on the start, and Sabol held on for the first couple laps. Then the two went toe-to-toe for the remainder of the race, swapping the lead an incredible 14 times in the 16 lap event. Ingham ended up coming out on top, taking the victory over Sabol's Team Bucknum entry by 0.482 seconds; while third place went to John Knudsen after his own lengthy battle with Dustin Welch.
Sunday once again had Ingham on the pole for the 2 liter race with Sabol following him down into turn one. On lap five, third place starter Dustin Welch pulled off the course with mechanical issues, allowing John Knudsen of Knudsen Racing and Bret MacDonald of CT Motorsport to fight for third place. Ingham drove his #71 machine to take the checkered flag over Sabol in second and Knudsen managing to claim the last spot on the podium.
On Saturday in the 1600 class, third place starter Philip Metzger dropped his PM Motorsports machine off the track in turn two, handing second place over to Adam Davis. Pole sitter Carl Skerlong looked unstoppable, as Davis trailed him for the remainder of the race. Formula TR newcomer Alexander Rossi drove to a solid third place finish as Kerry Lynch took the masters' race victory.
On lap three of the final 1600 race of the weekend, pole sitter Philip Metzger was side-lined for a mechanical problem, allowing Davis to slot himself into the lead. Skerlong followed Davis until a slip up caused Davis to slide off the track, Skerlong following in his wake. This allowed Rossi to lead until the last lap when contact was made between himself and Skerlong, giving Davis the victory over Skerlong in second, and Rossi who manage to hold onto third. In the masters' race it was once again Lynch who took the top spot.
By capturing second place and fastest race lap in Sunday's event, Skerlong was able to lock up the 1600 title one race early with only one point to spare. However, the 2 liter championship is still very much up for grabs as the Formula TR Pro Series will be back at Buttonwillow Raceway Park for the final rounds of the season on November 12th.
