Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 back in action at Oschersleben

Six weeks after the season opening double-header at Circuit Park Zandvoort, the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 is back in action. On July 7 and 8, two races will be taking place in the support package of the prestigious FIA GT championship at the circuit of Oschersleben in the north of Germany. Appropriately, a German driver is leading the points' standings as Frank Kechele is on top after his two wins at Zandvoort.

With its stadium-like atmosphere and an almost unparalleled overview for spectators in the elevated infield, the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben is a popular venue with drivers and fans alike. During the winter, the lay-out of the first corner has been changed significantly to create additional opportunities for overtaking. Halfway in between Hanover and the German capital of Berlin, the facility was opened in 1997 and has since attracted a host of international events and categories including Formula 3000, DTM, World Touring Car Championship, FIA GT and World Superbikes.

Since the start of the series early last year, the local Motopark Academy and Motorsport Arena teams have been loyal competitors in the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0. This year, there are no less than six drivers running under the Motopark Academy/Motorsport Arena banner, including points leader, Frank Kechele, fellow German Tobias Hegewald, Italian Fabio Onidi, Briton Oliver Oakes and young Poles Jakub Giermaziak and Andrej Gasenko. Another German team in the series is the seasoned SL Formula Racing outfit.

After two rounds and as many victories, Frank Kechele is the championship leader with 60 points, ahead of Finn, Valterri Bottas with 41. With a fourth and a second place in his first two races in the category, Bottas' campaign got off to a good start at Zandvoort and he impressed many experts with his charging driving style. After a pair of third places at the Dutch seaside resort, Tobias Hegewald is third in the points' standings.

Next to the 25 drivers regularly competing in this year's series, including two lady racers, some guest drivers are also expected to take part in the Oschersleben rounds, increasing the grid to some 30 cars.
