Finale at the Grand Prix circuit of Hockenheim
Only one week after the two successful rounds at the beautiful Grand Prix circuit of Spa-Francorchamps in the Belgian Ardenees region, drivers and teams from the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 head to Germany for the eighth and final race weekend of the 2007 season. And once more it is a circuit with a long Grand Prix tradition that will be the venue for thrilling single-seater action.
The circuit of Hockenheim, officially called Hockenheimring Baden-Wurttemberg, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Of course, the circuit is best known for having hosted the German round of the Formula 1 World Championship for many years, but the venue also has a long tradition in touring car and sports car racing. For instance, last weekend's season finale of the DTM, the popular German touring car series, attracted a record crowd of no less than 152,000 spectators. In the past, the circuit was famous for its long straights into the forests. A few years ago, the lay-out of the circuit was significantly changed with the fast Parabolica-section and a hairpin that provides many opportunities for overtaking. The well-known Motodrom section with its huge grandstands and its stadium-like character remained unchanged.
The battle for the title in the 2007 Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 has been decided already. Second place in the race at Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday was enough for German driver, Frank Kechele, to claim the title. He crowned his campaign by winning the race on Sunday. However, there is still plenty of action to look forward to. All drivers who will take part in this weekend's two races at the 4.574 kilometres long German circuit are aiming to round off the season with some good results. Especially as some of the front runners, including already-crowned champion Frank Kechele and his compatriot and team-mate Tobias Hegewald, will not be present at Hockenheim due to clashing commitments in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, that is racing at the same weekend in Portugal, others are determined to shine. This promises some exciting racing to end the season.
As usual, there will be two races of the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 at the Hockenheimring Baden-Wurttemberg. The first racce will be held on Sunday at 09.25 h, the second race is taking place at 16.00 h.
