Second half of the season starts at the 'Ring

For teams and drivers from the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 it is back to Oschersleben again this weekend for season rounds eleven and twelve, which will take place during the season final of the German Top 10 motorsport package. However, the end of the season it might be for some of the other series in this event programme, the action is far from over in the thrilling single-seater category that is the NEC Formula Renault 2.0. The two races in the Magdeburger Borde-region, halfway in between Hanover and Berlin, are promising plenty of action while the battle for the title is hotting up.

The Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, that is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, is the only circuit that is hosting two meetings of the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 this season. In early July, there were already two rounds in conjunction with the prestigious FIA GT championship and now, the popular category is visiting the venue together with the German Top 10 package.

Frank Kechele, driving for the local Motorsport Academy team, is still the points leader coming to Oschersleben, but his team mate Tobias Hegewald, who is entered under the Motorsport Arena banner, reduced the gap to only 25 points by scoring a pair of wins last time out at the Nurburgring. During the FIA GT weekend at Oschersleben in July, Kechele was quite successful with a win and a second place-finish and it is obvious that he want to repeat his success this time, but there are many others who want to shine as well, not at least those from the ranks of the Motopark Academy/Motorsport Arena-outfit, including Italian Fabio Onidi and Briton Oliver Oakes. For all of them, Oschersleben is more or less their home track and they have a lot of experience at the circuit, having racked up many miles in testing.

On Saturday, the NEC Formula Renault 2.0 race will start at 16.40 h. The race on Sunday starts at 10.00 h.

Q&A with Steffen Moller (Team Formula Sport, DK), one of the rising stars in the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0

Q: Steffen, you are in your first year in the Northern European Cup Formula Renault. How do you judge your own performance so far?

SM: It all started off quite well, after a couple of races, I was as high as fourth in the championship standings. However, after that, I had some technical problems which prevented me from doing better: electrical problems at Assen and then gearbox trouble at Zolder, so that was very disappointing. But now we spent a lot of time getting the car right and I really want to improve my championship position!

Q: You became champion in the Nordic Formula Renault 2.0 last year. Has that experience helped you in any way?

SM: It has helped me to the extend that I was already familiar with the car before I joined the NEC, which definitely made things easier, but the circuits I raced on in Scandinavia last year can in no way be compared to the track we are racing on in the NEC as the Scandinavian tracks are much smaller and slower. Moreover, competition in the NEC is much harder. You have some of the top guys from the Eurocup racing here.

Q: What, according to you, is the significance of Formula Renault in a young driver's career?

SM: Formula Renault is perfect as a stepping stone for young drivers who come from karting and want to make their way in motor racing. No matter where you go afterwards, be it Formula 3 or DTM or sports cars or whatever, Formula Renault is the place to learn how to properly drive a race car. And the good thing with Formula Renault is that you have so many opportunities to race. You can buy a car and then race it in the NEC, the Eurocup, in Britain, in France, in Italy, wherever you want.

Q: Now it is back to Oschersleben again. What are your expectations for this weekend?

SM: Last time we raced there I had massive understeer problems, but I am sure we have got these sorted now. Oschersleben is only 700 kilometres away from where I live, so it is more or less my home race, especially on the NEC calendar, although I must admit that fast, flowing tracks suit me better than Oschersleben with its 180 degree corners where it is all a little bit narrow. For this weekend, a top five finish is definitely my goal and if possible perhaps even a podium.
