Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 is getting ready for its third season

There is only one week to go before the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 (NEC FR 2.0) gets underway into its third season at the Hockenheimring Baden- Wurttemberg. Expectations are running high for the new season of the category that has quickly become one of the leading junior racing series in Europe.

Since the Northern European Cup Formula Renault 2.0 was founded in 2006, popularity of the series has rapidly increased. "For drivers, the NEC FR 2.0 is an attractive category to hone their racing skills at an international level at an affordable budget", says Mick de Haas, director of MdH Consultants. The NEC FR 2.0 is a joint operation between the pan- European agency and Renault MotorSport, the competition department of the German Renault importer, based in Cologne.

For the 2008 season, the series' organisers have come up with an attractive calendar which consists of high-profile race meetings in Belgium, Finland, Germany and The Netherlands. "We have selected popular events that are attractive for drivers, teams and sponsors", says Cara de Vlaming, series' co-ordinator on behalf of MdH Consultants. The season gets underway during the "Jim Clark Revival" meeting at Hockenheim (April 26/27), followed by the "Jubileumraces" at Zandvoort (May 31/June 1), commemorating the Dutch track's 60th anniversary. On June 14 and 15, there is a race meeting in conjunction with the Finnish Formula Renault 2.0 series at the circuit of Alastaro in Finland. The German circuit of Oschersleben will be hosting the category together with the FIA GT championship on July 5/6. Back-to-back events in The Netherlands and Belgium will be held on the first two weekends of August with the Rizla Racing Days at Assen on August 2/3 and the Masters of Formula 3 at Zolder on August 9/10. On August 30/31, the NEC FR 2.0 is running together with the World Series by Renault at the Nurburgring while the Grand Prix circuit of Spa-Francorchamps is the backdrop for the series' season finale during the Racing Festival on October 4/5. Every race meeting will be a "double header" event with one race each on Saturday and Sunday.

On the web: online videos of the races

Of course, visiting the races at the circuit is the best way to enjoy the fascination of the NEC FR 2.0. However, for those who can't be at the track, there is a good alternative: within hours after the race, online video footage can be watched on the series' websites www.necup.com.

With 16 teams and 28 drivers registered so far to take part in the NEC FR 2.0 this season, the series promises plenty of action. "We have an interesting mixture of drivers who already acquired some experience in the NEC and promising rookies", says Ralph Weishaupt, Renault Germany's motorsport co-ordinator.
